To add to the knowledge on the diversity of the butterflies from Atlantic Rainforest of Rio Grande do Sul State, a systematic survey was carried out at the valley of Maquiné river, from june 2001 to august 2002, in four sampling localities. A list resulted with 292 butterfly species, with 42 new registers for Rio Grande do Sul and seven rare and/or environmental quality indicator butterfly species.
