Validation of the Brunel mood scale for cardiac rehabilitation program

INTRODUCTION:

Cardiopulmonary and metabolic rehabilitation programs (CPMR) have adopted physical training protocols that value high volume and high intensity, with the possible onset of the overtraining (OVT) syndrome. In this context, the systematic use of mood investigative tools can assist in early detection of OVT syndrome.

OBJECTIVE:

To validate the Brunel Mood Scale (BRUMS) for CPMR participants.

METHODS:

247 individuals were enrolled in the study, with mean age of 63.3±10.5 years, participating for at least three months of the CPMR program. Descriptive analysis was presented as mean, standard deviation and frequency distribution. To assess the construct validity the confirmatory factor analysis was used. To verify the adequacy of the data the rate of Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) was used. To interpret the matrix, the method of extracting the principal components by the varimax method was adopted. The consistency was assessed by Cronbach's alpha coefficient.

RESULTS:

All BRUMS items obtained averages over nine demonstrating that the instrument questions were judged very clear by the participants. It was found that 83.3 % of the questions were correctly related to their respective domains. Regarding the analysis of internal consistency all domains demonstrated value above 0.6.

CONCLUSION:

The Brunel Mood Scale proved to be valid and well understood by patients who participate in cardiopulmonary and metabolic rehabilitation programs.
