Discursive Representation of Homelessness in the Correio Braziliense Newspaper (2014-2018): a Macro-Analytical Discussion on Stereotype and Public Agenda

ABSTRACT

In this study we analyze the representation of people living on the street in news published on the online platform of Correio Braziliense between 2014 and 2018. The research corpus consists of 84 texts that address public actions and policies on (and for) the homeless population. We consider studies of critical discourse analysis to be an adequate theoretical contribution to the study of the corpus, since it is an interdisciplinary approach that understands social practices in discourse and focuses on the relationship between language and society. With NVivo 11 software as a coding tool and support for qualitative research, we map the analytical categories of intertextuality and evaluation in the news and explore texts extensively. We aimed to perform a panoramic data analysis considering analytical categories based on theoretical and methodological support. The analytical approach makes it possible to reflect about the social perception of homelessness, which is relevant because negative stereotypes and prejudices influence the public agenda.
