English Pibid: Pre-Service Teacher Education and Literacies - Other Meanings for English Everywhere

ABSTRACT

The Pibid English subproject of a public university was the place where the empirical data of this research, outlined as an ethnographic case study, was collected. Participant observations, semi-structured interviews, and a field diary were used for data collection, which were then qualitatively analyzed and brought here via a descriptive-theoretical narrative. Written according to the theoretical perspective of literacy studies (JORDÃO, 2013; MENEZES DE SOUZA, 2011), this article aims at discussing the actions of the English subproject, considering one specific project elaborated and put into practice in public schools by the participants of Pibid English subproject, called English Everywhere. The analysis point to the meanings constructed by the participants (undergraduates, teacher educators and public school teachers) on what relates to English being everywhere in the academic world. Data analysis revealed literacy practices that connect the teaching of English to the development of students’ critical thinking, as a way to contribute to having students question their place in the world.
