An investigation of the effects of explicit pronunciation instruction in the English as a foreign language class

This study investigated the effects of explicit instruction, and their durability, in English as a foreign language classes. An interventionist action research was carried out with two classes of basic level, adolescent learners of English as a Foreign Language. In one of the classes there was intervention of weekly explicit lessons of pronunciation for one semester. All participants were recorded once before and twice after the interventions and all their recordings were phonetically transcribed and analyzed. The results indicate that, among other conclusions, there are positive effects of explicit pronunciation teaching and that these effects are durable.
