Relational processes in direct sales letters

This paper aims at analysing the instantiation of relational processes in a corpus of 104 direct sales letters, in order to study which are the roles ascribed to each interactant (the company, the addressee and the product). Corpus Linguistics was the main methodological tool: two softwares for lexical analysis (Manson, 1999; Scott, 1999) were used and a tagging system was developed. The outcomes were compared with part of the Bank of Brazilian Portuguese, maintained by LAEL - PUC-SP. Results show a set of functions that seems to be specific to each interactant.
