Based on the assumption that literacy is an appropriation process of textual genres, we present data from a larger research on film criticism as a genre of the press, which consists, for the Portuguese language teacher, in a challenge in terms of didactic transposition. The objective of this article is to approach verbal temporality, not as a simple set of linguistic devices controlled by inflexible norms, but as a linguistic-discursive mechanism that is processed in the effective functioning of the genre. The corpus consists of ten film criticisms written by Carlos Eduardo Lourenço Jorge - published in Folha de Londrina - analyzed from the socio-discursive interactionism perspective, which takes verbal temporality as one of the textual mechanisms responsible for textual thematic coherence.
