Ecclesiastical origin of the Lyceum of Angra dos Reis in the Province of Rio de Janeiro (1822-1859)

Abstract:

Based on a seminar created by a lay religious and directed by a Lazarist priest, the Provincial Assembly of Rio de Janeiro erected, in 1839, a public high school in the Angra dos Reis region. Observing the political and religious context, it is possible to infer about this relationship between Church and State in the 19th century and its prospection for a new nation. Inspired by Ricoeur's (2010) philosophy of history and by Ilmar Mattos's (1987) classic work, O tempo Saquarema, the research investigated the discourses and debates surrounding this period, about instruction and Catholic participation in this educational context. The sources used were the Annals of the Assembly and the Reports of the President of the Province, and other publications from that time.
