Proposals on education in the Agricultural, Industrial and Commercial Congress of Minas Gerais (1903)

Abstract:

The article analyzes the discussions about education in the work of the Agricultural, Industrial and Commercial Congress, which took place in Belo Horizonte, in 1903, a significant event for addressing the intersection between the social, political, economic, and educational demands of Minas Gerais producers. Publications, especially from the periodical press, on the organization and conduct of the meeting, are analyzed, and various proposals for professional instruction are identified, according to its levels, methods, and purposes. These proposals seek to respond to the absence of adequate vocational education, mainly practical, for both producers and workers, and the conviction that the education of the latter would involve organizing labor relations and combating loitering.
