Jaques-Dalcroze and Eurhythmics in Early Childhood education: introduction and translation of two selected works

Abstract:

Critical presentation followed by translation of ‘Au jardin d'enfants’ and ‘Enfants d'hier, d'aujourd'hui, de demain’, two texts written by the composer and pedagogue Émile Jaques-Dalcroze (1865-1950) and published in 1942 in the book Souvenir, notes et critiques (chapters VII and VIII). In these selected texts and here translated into Portuguese for the first time, Dalcroze discusses the role of Eurhythmics in the integral formation of preschool-age children (infant education) and exposes a very original and thought-provoking view of childhood, pointing out ways and putting in check the orthodox methods applied by his contemporaries. This production became possible to the extent that Dalcroze's vast didactic-theoretical work entered the public domain in the year 2020.
