Gathered, teachers and students: preparation for secular life based on the Estatutos do Recolhimento Nossa Senhora da Glória do Recife (1798)

Abstract:

The article delas with the history of retreats created in the modern period with the intention of guarding, shaping and/or punishing women. In the case of Portuguese America, the retreats both made up for the lake of contentual models and guarded or punished the women who lived in that territory. From the second half of the 18th century, due to the circulation of Enlightenment ideas, some schools attached to those spaces emerged with the intention of educating women for secular life and preparing them for marriage and motherhood. The Estatutos do Recolhimento Nossa Senhora da Glória do Recife, a work published in 1798 by Bishop Dom Azeredo Coutinho, portray the educational intention and ability to reformulate and adapt the retreats.
