“I had the will, but I didn't know”: teaching and training of rural educators (Uberlândia-MG, 1960-1980)

Abstract:

This study allowed us to better understand both the teaching training of Uberlândia rural educators (from 1960 to 1980) and its meanings for teaching practice. We conducted interviews with six teachers and searched documents such as school census, newspapers reports and minutes of the City Hall. Five of the interviewees were lay people, and it was only in the late 1960’s they began to attend training courses significant for their classroom practice and career advancement, as they reported. This article concludes that, they even though they did not thoroughly appropriated the organized knowledge of the teaching profession, the teachers developed their professional practice thanks to the appropriation of their own experiences becoming literate, and thanks to some training courses.
