How to read Unidad Popular: the publishing house Quimantú and children’s readings during ‘the Chilean way to socialism’ (1971-1973)

Abstract:

The electoral success of the Chilean Unidad Popular and the support of various social sectors were the main factors to stimulate profound social changes unprecedented in Chile. The cultural area is highlighted. The promotion of new reading practices becomes part of a cultural policy aligned with the project of forging a new man, with a secular and humanistic orientation. The publishing house Quimantú was a significant step in this direction. In this article, we will discuss the paths that led to its creation, as well as its main publications, prioritizing an analysis of publications aimed at children. The conclusion points out that the closure of the publishing house by the military forces, in September 1973, did not silence Quimantú's editorial utopia, which is still alive today.
