Press and Education in O Recopilador, ou Livraria dos Meninos: jornal moral, instructivo e miscellanico (1837-38)

Abstract: The article analyzes the newspaper O Recopilador (1837-1838), published in the State of Bahia, as an educational instance directed to the Brazilian youth. In dialogue with History of Education, History of Reading and History of Written Culture, it uses the newspaper as main source and analyzes its function to spread values, ideas and behaviors. It also discusses the political and social contexts involved in its production, as well as the materiality and the probable recipients. The analysis focuses on the originality of the subjects, the renounce of political matters and its target audience. It presents a moralizing and religious content, through the compilation of short stories, proverbs, biographies, the novel Robinson the Younger and other texts.
