Education, heredity, and eugenics: the educational project of Octavio Domingues (1926-1932)

Resumo:

The professor, geneticist, and director of the periodical Boletim de Eugenia Octavio Domingues (1897-1972) is an intellectual little studied in the field of Education, despite the publication of dozens of articles and books on the subject. From documentary research in dialogue with the specialized bibliography, this article analyzes the publications of Domingues in the Revista de Agriculturafrom 1926 to 1930, and in the Boletim de Eugenia from 1930 to 1932, explaining the relationship between education, heredity, and eugenics developed in these journals. We conclude that Domingues considered education as the most fruitful means for the formation of eugenics consciousness, structuring an elitist and authoritarian educational project, despite the pro-miscegenation and ‘humanist’ arguments present in his work.
