Experiments in demythology: The Conservative Revolution in Roots of Brazil

ABSTRACT

This article investigates the connections between Sérgio Buarque de Holanda and the constellation of authors known as representatives of the Weimar Republic's "conservative revolution". What is proposed here is an alternative interpretation of his early political positions, as well as a reappraisal of personalism and the "cordial man" concept in his debut book. Our research strategy was based on the examination of new documents, the comparison of his writings of the 1920s and 1930s with Raízes do Brasil first edition, the notes made by him in books of his personal library, and the reconstruction of the intellectual and social contexts in Berlin from 1929 to 1931.
