The “Scoundrel of Every Quality”. Action, Persecution and Racialization of the Criminal Subjects, Bahia, 1823-1850

Abstract

The idea in this article is to try to expose a facet of racialization, so present still in 21st century Brazil, that allows, by implication of historical aspects that refer to non-white sectors, to attack an entire way of life of the poor colored and rural population of rebel Bahia. By associating criminal subjects with the quilombos and mocambos, and crime with the “qualities” and “conditions” of the men of the people, these authorities intended to lead the racial hierarchy to produce a merciless persecution of free men, bandits or not, and enslaved people.
