“¡Desorganización, Suciedad!, ¡Esto es progreso!”: Representations of Urban Insecurities through the Daily El Sur of Concepción (1920-1935)

Abstract

Through the revision of the main newspaper of the city of Concepción and other complementary sources, this paper seeks to study the representations built and disseminated on urban insecurities, visualized through specific themes such as the degradation of the idea of progress, Poverty, disease and crime. Such a perspective, from our point of view, not only contributes to the understanding of regional and local history, but also to that of the city itself, seen from one of its actors, such as the press. In this sense, the period here selected (1920-1935) allows us to appreciate the previous and later visions of this printed medium on the crisis of 1929 and its intentional evaluation of the material and human reality of the city.
