Flutuações econômicas, crise política e greve geral na Bahia da Primeira República

In June 1919, it was deflagrated the first general strike in Bahia, rapidly spreading out towards many other cities of the "Recôncavo" area and becoming the most spectacular episode of the Bahia's working class history in the whole Brazil's "1st Republic" period. It will be demonstrated in this article that such a social mobilization was determined by three factors, two of which having an exogenous nature, and the third one being inherent in the working men's mobilization itself. The exogenous factors are linked to the economic ups and downs due to the World War I and to the 1919's crisis. The third factor, inherent in the working class itself, refers to changes occurred in its trade unions and political structure. Held together, these three factors were fundamental for the start-up and success of this social mobilization.
