The tridentine and roman authoritarian catholicism is the main subject of this present article, wich will focus the first decades of the XX century of the Brazilian catholic culture. In another moment, the article will approach the ultramontanism as a hard tendency in explaining the dicotomies among the old and the new, the good and the bad. In the last resort, all kinds of popular religiosity, as well as the feasts, cerimonies and cults, were analysed as an inexhaustible devotion source.
