In this article, we discuss Jesuit discourses and uses related to the ceremonial reception of a relic of St. Sebastian to Rio de Janeiro, in the context of an Ignatian visitation which occurred between 1584 and 1585. In particular, in relation to the local reaffirmation of the Society of Jesus' religious leadership, attention will be paid to the idealized image of the mission in times of difficulties and the allegorical symbolism related to the construction of the city by Portuguese, Jesuits and Indians. Based on the Narrativa epistolar by Fernão Cardim, Na festa de São Lourenço, attributed to José de Anchieta, and other relevant sources and evidence, also highlighted are the sacramental and collective remembrance of the protection offered by Saint Sebastian to the founders of Rio de Janeiro and the consecration of the arrow riddled saint as holy patron of the city.
