Elderly feelings and perspectives after falling

Falling among elderly people is a relevant public health problem due to the outcomes of this incident. So this research proposed to reach a better understanding, under the elderly perspective, of what takes place after this incident. This qualitative study was conducted with hospitalized post-falling elders in an emergency hospital in the city of Goiânia (GO). The sample comprised semi-structured interviews that were recorded and transcribed. The analysis of the information followed the subsequent methodological steps: interview and simultaneous record, notes on camp diary, interview transcription, analytic reading, classification into categories and final analysis. The results are presented in four analytic categories as follows: "repeated falls and their impact on the aging process", "functional limitations previous to the falls", "recovery expectation based on the spiritual faith" and "fear of physical dependence". It is noticed among the elderly studied that there is a passiveness course in accepting the aging process and that falls can cause a decrease of their functional ability and self-steam. Therefore, it is necessary to promote falling prevention programs and to support active aging.
