Urban properties and land control: the patrimony of Desterro’s City Council in the 19th century

Abstract

The objective of this article is to carry out an analysis of the formation and transformations of the patrimony of Desterro’s City Council throughout the 19th century. From the use of primary and secondary sources, we sought to discuss the registration of occupants from 1817, the patrimony demarcation of 1823 and the dynamics of possessions and leases carried out by the City Council. In the light of debates on the historiography of land ownership in Brazil, we identified the increase in state control over the rossio and the low influence of the Land Law during the period studied. Finally, it is worth highlighting the importance of expanding knowledge about the alienation of municipal land patrimony, its effects on the configuration of the city and on the formation of private real estate patrimony.
