An Urban Environmental Quality Indicator System for Coastal Metropolis (SIMeC): a proposal for territorial analysis

Abstract

The present paper presents a system of indicators for urban environmental quality in coastal metropoles. Therefore, 1133 indicators from 22 national and international systems were initially listed and analyzed. From these, indicators were selected for assessment by specialists residing in Brazilian coastal states. The assessment enabled the validation of the system with the presentation of new indicators. As a result, 69 indicators associated with urban welfare were obtained: infrastructure, inclusion and social equity, quality of life, productivity and environmental sustainability, which were associated to the Drivers-Pressures-State- Impacts-Response (DPSIR) framework. As a result, the system of indicators initially proved to be consistent, and is a contribution that may be replicated in different Brazilian coastal metropoles. Thus, the use of these indicators may be used an instrument for taking decisions for thee integrated management of the coastal zone.
