The blue and green network in spatial planning: approximations and distances

Abstract

With an expansion in the idea of sustainable development since the 1990s, there has been a strong tendency to incorporate the environmental dimension into the territorial planning policies. On several levels, a transposition of the concepts in natural sciences, many of them related to the formulations of Landscape Ecology, has been identified. The proposed "green and blue network" in Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France, emerged within this context, and has served as a reference for the development of a recent planning process of the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte. The aim of this text is to examine these two projects, detailing the contexts in which they were undertaken together with the contents, and while maintaining a critical distance, to discuss the possibilities and merits, as well as the limitations and contradictions.
