Continuing education for teachers of the early years in basic education: actions aimed at literacy in cities with a low Ideb

This article presents partial results of a survey developed by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes), the Anísio Teixeira National Institute for Educational Studies and Research (Inep) and the Education Observatory Program. The aim is to discuss activities carried out from 2011 to mid-2012, in Portuguese Language area, related to reading and writing skills, reflecting on continuing education initiatives. This is a research in theoretical assumptions of Applied Linguistics, because it is based on the studies of language and its effective actions. The partial results, confirmed by Ideb 2011, point to significant advances in the quality of teaching in the cities involved, especially regarding Portuguese subject.
