Continuing education: a tool for undergraduate faculty development

OBJECTIVE: To describe the perceptions by faculty and tutors in the Professional Practice Unit in the first year of the courses in Medicine and Nursing at Famema, in relation to the relevance of participating in the Continuing Education program. METHODS: Exploratory study using a semi-structured questionnaire. Thematic analysis technique was used, based on collective subject discourse. RESULTS: Nearly all of the study subjects considered the Continuing Education activity relevant. The faculty highlighted the activity as an ideal space for learning, fostering exchange of experiences and reflection on practice. The tutors emphasized the activity as a productive space for discussion and reflection, while pointing out that its full potential still remains to be explored. REMARKS: According to the faculty, the Continuing Education proposal (reflection on practice) has been implemented, but still not in keeping with the tutors' expectations or understanding. Understanding the importance of faculty development for ensuring an innovative undergraduate curriculum, it is necessary to analyze the problems involved in the implicit meaning in this collective discourse in the search for a form of Continuing Education that is more responsive to tutors
