Relational Dynamics in the Pediatric Consultation as a Pedagogical Experience

Abstract:

The observed inadequacy of medical education has led to the institutionalization of discussions on evaluation in Brazilian medical schools. Recognizing the need for appropriate methodological tools to evaluate interrelational aspects in medical practice and in the formative process of medical students, a group activity was created to approach these aspects. The authors conducted weekly meetings with internists and pediatric residents, using focus groups with dramatization techniques within a pedagogical approach. At the end, students wrote reports describing and evaluating the activity. This paper is the result of a qualitative analysis of these reports. Feelings and health care actions in clinical pediatric practice emerged, and the most frequent themes were: hierarchical relations, personal limitations, omnipotence, professional roles, competence, experiences, scientific knowledge, common sense, and rationality The analysis had both pedagogical and evaluative objectives, making it possible to comprehend fundamental aspects of both teaching and the institutional academic environment in medical schools.
