Implementation of National Guidelines in Medical Schools in Paraná

The approval of the new LDB in 1996 (National Law for Educational Guidelines and Bases) led to the elaboration of the "Diretrizes Curriculares Nacionais-DCN (National Curricular Guidelines) focused on abilities allowing the physician to perform his profession facing up to the new technologies and to the challenges posed by the development of the Unified Health System (SUS). The purpose of this specific article that contributes to the data collected for a broader research project supported by the National Research Council (grant number 474.029/2003-04) was to analyze the implantation of the DCN in Paraná by verifying the characteristics of medical education. The study involved a qualitative approach and content analysis. A survey of university level institutions offering medical courses was performed. Data were collected by means of questionnaires and based on information obtained from the Political Pedagogical Programs (PPP). Two courses presented implantation of the DCN to an advanced degree, one showed initiatives towards implantation of some aspects and two other courses followed quite traditional curricular formats. The obtained data suggest that there is motivation towards the innovation of medial education in Paraná, expressed by curricula inspired by a number of principles contained in the DCN.
