Professional Identities in the construction of new health service practices

The need for changes in labor processes and in the management and training of human resources is widely recognized and the inertia of the educational institutions in this context is being criticized. This is particularly true for universities and medical schools, which present difficulties and strong resistance against changes and continue graduating professionals who nourish health service models that several reforms have sought to overcome. In societies with regulated work markets and where health care systems and professional organizations are complex and structured, different kinds of health services, professional knowledge and technological organization of work are essential components of professional insertion. This study analyzes the identity of the medical professional and its construction, the role that medical education plays in this context and the importance of professional practice in the complementation and consolidation of this identity.
