From the Aether questioned by Dirac to the Standard Model: the diachrony of Lorentz-symmetry violation

This contribution sets out to present a diachronic path of a relevant line of activities concerning issues related to Physics beyond the Standard Model of Fundamental Interactions and Particle Physics, namely, field-theoretical models displaying Lorentz-symmetry violation. Very tine effects that may signal some deviation from Lorentz symmetry – fundamental invariance the formulation of relativistic quantum theories rely on – deserve a relevant room in the literature of field and particle theories. Aiming at a target audience of undergraduate students, the present text focus on the presentation of the timeline of the development of the topic. The effort is to provide the beginners and non-practicing the perception on how the investigation of effects stemming from the violation of Lorentz symmetry showed up in different moments over the second half of past century and reached the present status of intense theoretical and experimental quests. More recently, areas like the study of Dirac and Weyl materials in Condensed Matter Physics and the inspection of optical effects in Astrophysics are also showing increasing interest in the discussion of Lorentz-symmetry violation.
