Evaluation of Mothers of Toddlers that Are Special Education's Target Group of an Intervention Program

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the opinion of mothers of small children that are special education's target group of an intervention program. Mother's age group varied from 29 to 56 years old and the children's age group varied from 11 months to 3 years. The intervention program occurred in 11 weekly sessions, with 120 minutes duration, structured in two parts: (a) parental practices and children's development and (b) themes that the parents were interested in. Participants answered an instrument that evaluated the quality of the intervention, at the end of each session and at the end of the program. The results show that all the aspects of the program were well evaluated by the participants, with scores varying from 4.0 "good' to 5.0 'very good'. The aspects that received a better evaluation in different meetings werelecturer's ability to conduct the meeting in an organized wayand the participant's opportunity to talk. As positive aspects of the program, the mothers pointed out that the program clarified their doubts and helped them solve difficulties related to their children's needs. On the other hand, time adequacy for each theme was evaluated by the mothers as short, and their participation was evaluated as a negative aspect in the intervention. In conclusion, the intervention program for mothers of children that are special education's target group was well evaluated by the mothers, and it provided an opportunity for sharing experiences among the participants.
