INTERSECTIONAL FEMINISMS: TROUBLESHOOTING THE SUBJECT OF FEMINISM

ABSTRACT

The understanding of the concept of intersectionality is sometimes imprisoned in identity interpretations that distort its relevance. This essay intends to present the historical emergence of the notion of intersectionality and, for that, it problematizes the concept of gender in feminist studies from the relational approach, highlighting gender as a category, to the post-structuralist radical critique, which questions the substantiality of gender and, therefore, it highlights the importance of the intersectional understanding of gender relations in its movement of production, control and exclusion of dissident subjectivities from the cisheteropatriarchal white norm. Therefore, this essay highlights the historical importance of the black feminist movement in the fight against the processes of exclusion and silencing, proposing an intersectional reading and breaking with the identity and substantialist proposal of the concept of gender.
