Political disputes between social movements: the University of Workers IMPA

Abstract:

In this article, we analyze the emerging political disputes between the social organizations involved in the creation of a popular university: the Workers University of IMPA. Our objective is to contribute to the understanding of the existing obstacles to the articulation between social organizations, even when they have a common goal. This is necessary because Latin American social movements have been developing a variety of formative strategies with the creation of multiple socio-educational spaces. Our research is based on the ethnographic work carried out for three years (2011-2013) at IMPA, a company recovered by its workers. The analysis of the emerging bonding structure in this factory allows us to conclude about aspects that hinder the integration between social movements when the bond - even between peers - is seen as a threat to the preservation of their previous structures.
