Representation of homosexuality in Spiritism

Abstract

This article presents an analysis of the construction process of the representations of homosexuality in the Brazilian Spiritist Doctrine and the perception of spiritist gay men from data collected during 2016 to 2019 in Campina Grande, Paraíba. The results obtained were products of research initially carried out in the work of Allan Kardec and from contemporary Brazilians mediums’ speeches and publications. To expand the debate, interviews with spiritist gay men were conducted. The French Discourse Analysis was taken in consideration as theoretical-methodological aspect. It is observed that the representations presented by the interlocutors correspond, in parts, with those thought by the spiritists, however, there are resistance showing that the individual’s subjectivity hampers and helps to resignify concepts and religious practices. Therefore, through this work, it seeks to contribute to broadening the debate over the sociology of religion in interface with sexuality and, to conclude, to expand the debate over the Brazilian spiritism.
