This article intends to be a contribution to the understanding of racial discrimination in Brazil. It begins diagnosing the lack of substantive studies about the semantic contents of such social practice in the current Brazilian social sciences literature. The author exposes the pitfalls of the argument that the content of prejudice against blacks was redefined, after the abolition of slavery, with the advent of modernity in Brazil. With the help of a typology of misrecognition forms, he highlights some aspects of racial discrimination and prejudice that have not been dealt with in the literature, presenting an alternative argument to explain these social phenomena in modern Brazil.
