Political tolerance and protest activism in Brazil: behavioral effects support for political rights

Abstract:

Literature on political behavior has analyzed the relationships between attitudes of political tolerance and different forms of activism, with conflicting results. In order contribute to this agenda, this article explores data from the 2018 wave of the Latin American Public Opinion Project to analyze the effects of the expression of political tolerance for protest activism in the Brazilian context. It constitutes, therefore, a study of the possible behavioral consequences of political attitudes in a context of growing affective polarization. Using a non-parametric combination technique (Coarsened Exact Matching - CEM), the results indicate that, even when the effects are controlled by explanatory variables recognized by studies on participation, the positive impact of political tolerance is consistent and favors contestatory political activism.
