The voice of a goal: the sports broadcasting by Víctor Hugo Morales of Maradona’s “Goal of the Century”

ABSTRACT

This paper aims to analyze the broadcasting of one of the most considered celebrate goals in the history of global soccer, Diego Maradona’s second goal against the England national team during the 1986 men’s FIFA World Cup. This quarterfinal match carried, besides the traditional sporting rivalry, the diplomatic disagreement between the two nations due to the Falklands War, which occurred few years before. Considering this context, the Víctor Hugo Morales’ broadcasting of the second goal of the Argentina national team, brings up many representative elements to compose the sportive dynamics: the game highlights, the unpredictability and emotions aroused. Through the analyzes, it was possible to identify the intense nationalism, but also aspects that show the fascination and the rapture in face of the sporting moment witnessed and reported.
