Rugby and Argentina: from values and their contradictions to the dispute for the formation of national identity

ABSTRACT

This essay discusses the relationship between rugby and the question of Argentine national identity. The paper presents a brief contextualization about Argentine rugby and its social formation, the role of the captain in rugby, and how national identity is disputed within the sport. From this, it relates the tribute of the Argentinean national rugby team to the passing of Diego Maradona and the case of racism involving some athletes, including captain Pablo Matera. As a conclusion, the points out how this identity manifests itself in a double place, that is, in its relationship within the country by denying what is national; and by appropriating the national-popular in the relationship with the outside.
