The sportization process of rowing in São Paulo city (1899-1949)

ABSTRACT

The aim of this article is to analise the rowing’s sportization process in the city of São Paulo. The period of this research is the moment when rowing was primarily realized at Tietê river. The hypothesis of this research is regatta clubs and federations were fundamentals to the transformations of rowing in the city. The sources show that tournaments realized in São Paulo became gradually more competitive and regulated. However, the Tietê river, with its geographic particularities, was a huge impediment to the sportization process. The conclusion is, while this practice became more sportive, it knocked against local characteristics, expressed by the geography of Tietê river.
