Chest radiographs dosimetry study using high kilovoltage techniques

We compared chest radiographs using high and low kilovoltage techniques with the aim of obtaining best quality techniques as well as a reduction in patient doses. The study was performed in 48 patients randomized that were submitted to 70 postero-anterior chest radiographs using high (120 kVp, 2.3 mAs) and low (70 kVp, 5-10 mAs) kilovoltage techniques. The entrance skin dose values were measured with a Diamentor. The low kilovoltage technique showed a 326% increase of the dose when compared with the high kilovoltage technique. The use of the high kilovoltage technique decreased the number of low quality radiographs that required repetition, thus sparing the equipment and reducing the costs due to best quality radiographic images.
