Culture, power and decision in the brazilian household organization

This study shows an analysis of the impact of organization culture and the psycho-dynamics of power on the decision process in a familly firm. The investigation, based on case study methods, used participant observation and interviews with directors and managers of a familiar firm in Brazil. The data had been analyzed using Pagès psycho-dynamic approach and Lane´s graphical discourse analysis. It was found that the organization priorizes and emphatizes the affective relations, mutual confidence, loyalty, length of service and dedication and uses these as criteria for promotions. Managers- subordinates relations was marked by both authoritarianism and paternalism. Verbal communication and personal contacts were preferred. The decision process tended to be improvised, during which consensus and also influenced by power and cultural relations based on emotional factors having their origin in family questions.
