• Sonication-assisted preparation of CaO nanoparticles for antibacterial agents

Tang, Zhen-Xing; Yu, Zhen; Zhang, Zhi-Liang; Zhang, Xin-Yi; Pan, Qin-Qin; Shi, Lu-E

Resumo em Inglês:

The effect of calcination conditions on the size and killing activity of CaO nanoparticles towards L. plantarum was studied in this paper. The results showed that CaO nanoparticles with a diameter of 20 nm could be obtained under the investigated conditions. The lethal effect of CaO nanoparticles after incubation of 6 or 24 h increased with increasing calcination time. Using CaO-SA, CaO-SB, and CaO-SC after a 24-h exposure, 2.25, 3.37, and 5.97 log L. plantarum were killed, respectively, at a concentration of 100 ppm. The current results show that the use of CaO nanoparticles as antibacterial agents has significant potential in food-relevant industries.

In this work, the preparation and characterization of materials such as zirconium oxide (ZrO2) and phosphotungstic acid promoted zirconium oxide (ZrO2-H3PW12O40) is presented. Physico-chemical characterization results showed that addition of H3PW12O40 acted as both a textural and chemical promoter of zirconium oxide. The incorporation of phosphotungstic acid into the ZrO2 matrix delayed the sintering of the material and stabilized ZrO2 in the tetragonal phase. ZrO2 acidity was also enhanced, developing strong acid sites on its surface. The Pt/ZrO2-H3PW12O40 catalyst was active for n-pentane isomerization at 250 °C, exhibiting high selectivity to iso-pentane (95%). This result is probably due to its suitable acidity.

Mior, Renata; Dutra, Joyce Nunes Bianchin; Carasek, Eduardo; Martendal, Edmar

Resumo em Inglês:

In this study, a method for determination of hexavalent chromium in aqueous samples using liquid-liquid microextraction (LLME) and detection by Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (F AAS) was developed. The LLME procedure was based on the extraction of Cr (VI) by acetone at a sample pH of 1.2. The use of saturated ammonium sulphate solution allowed effective separation of the aqueous and organic phases and acetone extracted chromium. The sample pH, acetone volume and stirring time were optimized by a full factorial design.

The aim of this work was to produce biosurfactants through submerged fermentation using microorganisms isolated from soil contaminated with diesel. Microorganisms were isolated, characterized by the production of biosurfactants, and used to study the influence of type, induction and concentration of ammonium sulfate as a nitrogen source in the culture medium. The microorganisms that showed best results, in terms of production of biosurfactants, were identified as being of the genus Pseudomonas and Bacillus. The biosurfactants produced proved capable of reducing the surface tension of the media to 39 mN/m and 34 mN/m, respectively. Higher biosurfactant production was obtained in the medium containing 1% soybean oil without ammonium sulfate.
• Characterization of Unye bentonite after treatment with sulfuric acid

Caglar, Bulent; Afsin, Beytullah; Koksal, Engin; Tabak, Ahmet; Eren, Erdal

Resumo em Inglês:

Unye bentonite was found to consist predominantly of a dioctahedral smectite along with quartz, tridymite, cristobalite, and minor fractions of feldspar and anatase. A considerable amount of Al was retained as a constituent in acid-resistant impurities following the decomposition of the montmorillonite via acid treatment at an acid/clay ratio of 0.4. These impurities were mesoporous with a maximum surface area of 303.9±0.4 m² g-1. A sharp decrease in the d001 lattice spacing of the montmorillonite to 15.33 Å reflected the reduction of the crystallinity in the activated products. In addition, the increase in the ease with which newly formed hydroxyl groups were lost paralleled the severity of the acid treatment.
• Isomerization-cracking of n-octane on catalysts based on heteropolyacid H3Pw12O40 and heteropolyacid supported on zirconia and promoted with Pt and Cs

Manuale, Debora L.; Torres, Gerardo C.; Benítez, Viviana M.; Badano, Juan M.; Yori, Juan C.; Sepúlveda, Jorge H.

Resumo em Inglês:

Isomerization - cracking of n-octane was studied using H3PW12O40 (HPA) and HPA supported on zirconia and promoted with Pt and Cs. The addition of Pt and Cs to the supported HPA did not modify the Keggin structure. The Pt addition to the supported HPA did not substantially modify the total acidity; however, the Brönsted acidity increased significantly. Cs increased the total acidity and Brönsted acidity. A linear relation was observed between the n-C8 total conversion and Brönsted acidity. The most adequate catalysts for performing isomerization and cracking to yield high research octane number (RON) are those with higher values of Brönsted acidity.

Valle, Paula S.; Montesso, Murilo; Nalin, Marcelo; Donoso, José Pedro; Silva, Igor D. A.; Magon, Claudio J.

Resumo em Inglês:

In this work we report a systematic study on the influence of the chemical nature of silver precursors on the formation of glass-ceramics from oxide glasses. Thermal, structural and optical properties were analyzed as a function of the glass composition. Controlled crystallization was achieved by thermal treatment of the samples above glass transition. The influence of time of treatment on both nanoparticle growth and optical properties of the samples was studied by transmission electron microscopy and UV-Vis spectroscopy, respectively. Results showed that only glasses containing AgCl and AgNO3 led to glass-ceramics growth after thermal treatment.

Oliz, Camila Mizette; Pereira, Camila Corrêa; Vieira, Mariana Antunes; Ribeiro, Anderson Schwingel; Nunes, Adriane Medeiros

Resumo em Inglês:

This paper describes the development of methods in micro-scale for the determination of K, Mg, Na and Zn in meat by atomic spectrometry techniques. The limits of detection (LOD) for K and Na by microdigestion were 0.18 and 0.20 mg g-1, respectively whereas LOD for Mg and Zn by microsolubilization with TMAH were 2.40 and 18.4 µg g-1, respectively. The RSD values were lower than 6.0% and the CRMs analyzed showed values with 95% agreement. The proposed methods are simple, fast and use small amounts of sample (around 10 mg) yet do not require special equipment for sample preparation.
• Kinetical study about the cobalt electrodeposition onto polycrystalline platinum

Rios-Reyes, Clara Hilda; Mendoza-Huizar, Luis Humberto; Reyes-Cruz, Víctor Esteban; Veloz Rodríguez, María Aurora

Resumo em Inglês:

An electrochemical study of Co electrodeposition onto polycrystalline Pt from an aqueous solution containing 10-2 M CoCl2 + 1 M NH4CI (pH = 9.3) was conducted at overpotential conditions. The current density transients showed two maxima that corresponded to two nucleation and growth processes. The entire transient behavior was adequately predicted considering the contribution to the total current of four different processes: a Langmuir-type adsorption process, a diffusion-controlled two-dimensional instantaneous nucleation, and two three-dimensional nucleation and growth processes.

Alfaro, Salvador; Valenzuela, Miguel A.

Resumo em Inglês:

In the present work, beta zeolites were prepared by an alternative route called steam-assisted conversion (SAC). Several zeolites were synthesized using amorphous dry gels with a low SDA concentration (0.09 mol, TEAOH). Temperature and crystallization time were the main parameters studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were the characterization techniques employed. The zeolites prepared showed mixed phases such as beta, MTW and ZSM-5 while only one sample treated at 150ºC with 24 h of crystallization time showed a pure ZSM-5 phase (SAC-5). These preliminary results serve as a starting point for optimizing the synthesis of a specific type of zeolite using the SAC method.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions were measured monthly from January to June 2010 in the aeration tank of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Southeast Brazil. Emissions were lower in summer than winter and were positively related with influent ammonium (NH4+) concentration. The average N2O emission was 1.11 kg N day-1 corresponding to 0.02% of the influent total nitrogen load. The average emission factor calculated for the population served was 2.5 lower than that proposed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for inventories of N2O emissions from WWTPs with controlled nitrification and denitrification processes.
• Phytotoxic effects of metabolites from Alternaria euphorbiicola against its host plant Euphorbia heterophylla

Varejão, Eduardo Vinícius Vieira; Demuner, Antônio Jacinto; Barbosa, Luiz Cláudio de Almeida; Barreto, Robert Weingart

Resumo em Inglês:

A bioassay-guided fractionation of culture filtrates of the fungus Alternaria euphorbiicola, a pathogen of the weed Euphorbia heterophylla, led to the isolation of anhydromevalonolactone (1), tyrosol (2), (R)-( - )-mevalonolactone (3), and cycloglycylproline (4). When tested on the punctured leaves of the host plant, these compounds produced bleached lesions with dark brown margins at concentrations as low as 80 µM. When tested on the leaves of other relevant weeds, only cycloglycylproline showed selective activity against E. heterophylla. This is the first report on the isolation of phytotoxins from A. euphorbiicola and on the phytotoxicity of anhydromevalonolactone, (R)-( - )-mevalonolactone, and cycloglycylproline.

Vitorino, Luciana Cristina; Silva, Fabiano Guimarães; Lima, William Cardoso; Soares, Marcos Antônio; Pedroso, Rita Cássia Nascimento; Silva, Marolí Rodrigues; Dias, Herbert Júnior; Crotti, Antônio Eduardo Miller; Silva, Márcio Luís Andrade e; Cunha, Wilson Roberto; Pauletti, Patrícia Mendonça; Januário, Ana Helena

Resumo em Inglês:

Hyptis marrubioides Epling is a native plant from Brazilian Cerrado. In this paper, the response of in vitro microplants of this species to inoculation with bacterial and fungal endophytic isolates is evaluated. HPLC-DAD analysis showed the presence of 3,4-O-(Z)-dicaffeoylquinic acid and quercetin-7-O-glucoside as the main components. GC/MS analysis demonstrated that the sesquiterpenes τ-cadinol and caryophyllene oxide were only produced in microplants inoculated with endophytic bacteria, while methyl hexadecanoate, methyl heptadecanoate and methyl (Z,Z,Z) 9,12,15-octadecatrienoate and the triterpene methyl 3β-hydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oate were overexpressed only when the microplant was treated with endophytic fungi.
• Hemocidinas derivadas da hemoglobina: estruturas, propriedades e perspectivas Revisão

Carvalho, Larissa A. C.; Machini, Maria Teresa

Resumo em Inglês:

The increasing incidence of microbial infections, high toxicity, and high level of resistance associated with conventional antibiotics has created a need for new drugs. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) constitute a promising alternative and/or an important source of knowledge given their ability to inhibit the growth and/or to kill bacteria, fungi, parasites and/or viruses through mechanisms of action different from those of non-peptide drugs. This review focused on this important class of organic compounds that includes hemocidins resulting from hemoglobin proteolysis in vivo and in vitro or from chemical synthesis, subject of research in foreign and Brazilian laboratories.

Gebara, Sâmya Soler; Ré-Poppi, Nilva; Nascimento, André Luiz Carneiro Soares do; Raposo Junior, Jorge Luiz

Resumo em Inglês:

Two methods using headspace solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography - mass spectrometry were developed for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and BTEX. Best results were obtained using DVB/CAR/PDMS fiber, with 10 min extraction at 25 °C and 0.15 min desorption at 260 °C (BTEX), and PDMS/DVB fiber, with 60 min extraction at 90 °C, 10% NaCl and 5 min desorption at 270 °C (PAH). LOD intervals were 3x10-2 - 5x10-2 µg L-1 (BTEX) and 1.6x10-3 - 1.4 µg L-1 (PAH). The methods were applied to forty-five groundwater samples from monitoring wells of gas stations and only benzene level exceeded the limit established by Brazilian regulations.

The efficiency of XAD®-2 resin in sampling the pesticides α and β-endosulfan from air contaminated in the laboratory was evaluated. Sampling efficiency ranged from 87 to 108% for α-endosulfan and from 71 to 84% for β-endosulfan with relative standard deviation lower than 19%. The pesticides were not detected in the second section of the cartridge showing the good retention capacity of XAD®-2 for these analytes. Method quantification limits were 0.32 and 0.34 µg m-3 for α and β-endosulfan, respectively. These results suggest that the proposed method may be useful for evaluating occupational exposure to these compounds.

Kucukkolbasi, Semahat; Bilber, Onur; Ayyildiz, H. Filiz; Kara, Huseyin

Resumo em Inglês:

In the present study, a reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic (RP-HPLC) procedure was developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of seven water-soluble vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, cyanocobalamin, ascorbic acid, folic acid, and p-aminobenzoic acid) and four fat-soluble vitamins (retinol acetate, cholecalciferol, α-tocopherol, and phytonadione) in multivitamin tablets. The linearity of the method was excellent (R² > 0.999) over the concentration range of 10 - 500 ng mL-1. The statistical evaluation of the method was carried out by performing the intra- and inter-day precision. The accuracy of the method was tested by measuring the average recovery; values ranged between 87.4% and 98.5% and were acceptable quantitative results that corresponded with the label claims.
• Development of a simple analytical method for determining trihalomethanes in beer using a headspace solid-phase microextraction technique

Santos, Marcel Silveira dos; Carasek, Eduardo

Resumo em Inglês:

We developed a simple, rapid, and solventless method for analyzing trihalomethanes in beer samples using headspace solid-phase microextraction. The effects of varying experimental parameters, such as extraction temperature and time, addition of sodium chloride, and agitation speed, on extraction yield were studied using a univariate experimental design. Limits of detection between 0.22 and 0.46 µg L- 1 and wide linear ranges were achieved for trihalomethanes. We measured the trihalomethane recoveries and precision (as the standard deviation of repeat measurements) and demonstrated the applicability of the proposed method by analyzing 32 beer samples.

The Method of Case Studies has often been employed in higher education, but few initiatives have focused on basic education. This work addressed the production of cases by students from a chemistry teacher training course. The proposal was applied in the discipline of Basic Inorganic Chemistry and aimed to familiarize students with the Method from the preparation of cases focused on basic education. We believe the proposal was efficient in showing future teachers the need to develop teaching strategies that, beyond learning concepts, stimulate students in training skills such as teamwork, critical thinking and decision making.
• O centenário da Teoria de Bohr Assuntos Gerais

Braga, João Pedro; Filgueiras, Carlos A. L.

Resumo em Inglês:

The year 2013 marks the centennial of that wondrous year in which Niels Bohr proposed a novel theory about the constitution of atoms and small molecules after which the way we regard atoms and their behaviour began to be drastically altered. Bohr drew on several sources for his original description of the atoms, most importantly on spectroscopy and Balmer's equation thereof, the new quantum hypothesis advanced a few years earlier by Planck, and the planetary atom proposed by Rutherford. Although Bohr's ideas were to be eventually overtaken by the advent of quantum mechanics, his theory was the basis of a new thinking about atoms and molecules which constitutes an invaluable asset in the development of science ever since.

Filgueiras, Carlos A. L.; Braga, João P.; Lemes, Nelson H. T.

Resumo em Inglês:

A hundred years ago, a twenty-eight year old Danish scientist published a series of three papers in which electron motion was quantized. The Bohr atomic model is surely known by every chemistry student. Nevertheless in this same 1913 trilogy, Bohr studied atoms with several electrons as well as molecules. Chemistry students, in general, are not aware of the Bohr molecule. The present paper aims at rescuing this important classical model. A review of the Bohr atomic model for both one and several electrons is discussed, together with a theoretical presentation of the Bohr molecule.
