“Torture that never ends”: Analysis of the suffering of mothers of young people murdered in Fortaleza

Abstract

This article aims to analyze, from an intersectional perspective, the psychosocial suffering of mothers of young people murdered in the dynamics of violence in peripheral territories of Fortaleza. The reflections come from research-intervention, which, by taking intersectionality as a key concept, allows us to follow the realities experienced by women without incurring a depoliticization and individualization of their sufferings. The work sought to articulate studies from Social Psychology with authors of Feminisms and related areas that deal with violence, black women and intersectionalities. Data were produced by interviews and observations of social movements. The results and discussion section draws attention to a) blaming processes and their relationship with class, race and gender, in which the deaths of youth induces more precariousness in these women’s lives, and b) fear, isolation, loneliness and silence as actors in the psychosocial suffering producing new forms of sociability.
