Mental Representation: The Difficulties in the Cognitive and Metacognitive Activity when Solving Mathematical Problems

This study is included in the field of cognitive investigation. It encloses the difficulties of comprehension strategies of the Mental Representation phase regarding the solution of verbal stated mathematical problems, seen in teachers of the first years of basic education. The difficulties, related to the Mental Representation construction, were analyzed, more specifically the ones associated to the integration phase. The processes, which account for changes in the initial Mental Representation are also investigated: encoding, combination and selective comparison. The results show that psychopedagogical intervention on cognitive monitoring allowed teachers to work on their own cognitive and metacognitive activities, as well as control and regulate the cognitive functions related to processes of representational change, thus reducing significantly the difficulties in the use of strategies for solving mathematical problems
