Abstract
The article introduces part of the results of a doctoral research that investigated the education of children by their families during the 19th century in the Province of Paraná (1853-1889). It aims at questioning a particular type of source - obituaries published in newspapers - in order to build a definition of that education provided by parents to children during childhood. The first part introduces and theorizes the necrological testimony as a source. Then it describes one of the historical problems and the questions to which such evidence was submitted. The third part introduces some historical interpretations to the presented problem based on obituaries published in newspapers of the Province of Paraná.
