This article is aimed at reviewing the most outstanding and influential approaches that theoretically determine research about the Uruguayan-Brazilian border as a cultural and linguistic phenomenon. From a linguistic point of view, the perspective taken is one that particularly captures a notion of language (langue) and subject (therefore, speaker) in order to present some reflections about possibly attributing a certain peculiarity to the border speaker's condition.
