The magazine, the sanctuary, the school: questions for the study of the saletinos catholic congregation and its role in Brazilian education

This article assumes that one cannot understand the actions of a foreign religious congregation in the field of education in Brazil without understanding its creation, the motivations that brought them to the country as well as the interests involved in its installation and in its works over time. While studying the action of the Saletinos in Brazil, it was possible to grasp these extremely interwoven processes around the construction of a devotion "imported" from France. The Saletinos created a magazine, built a sanctuary and founded some schools. The magazine The Messenger of Our Lady of la Salette was an important vehicle through which they developed the devotion in the country. In this magazine, the priests forged a memory of the congregation and also erased disputes and tensions about their own origins in France, creating a bond with Brazilian culture and structuring the articles in a didactic sequence.
