Evaluation of the effect of grinding on the performance and characterization by DRIFT/NIR of microbicides in commercial surface coatings

In this work, an evaluation is presented of the FT-IR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRIFT) technique in the NIR region (DRIFT/NIR) for characterizing OIT, diuron and carbendazim in acrylic paint compositions containing these ground microbicides reduced to particle sizes around 5 µm. The DRIFT-NIR analysis showed analytical bands at 6077, 5799, 5681 and 4335 cm- 1 for OIT, 4943 and 4435 cm- 1 for carbendazim, with the absorption at 4943 cm- 1 being possibly attributed to diuron, as well. The presence of microbicides in the dry paint film was also confirmed by HPLC and microbiological analyses, which revealed that the ground microbicides are more effective for the microbiological control, enhancing the preservation of the dry paint film compared to the non-ground microbicides. This allows the microbicides to be used in lower concentrations in paints and coating materials, thus saving financial resources and lowering the toxicological impacts to humans and the environment.
