FRP bars: assesing elastic modulus nondestructively

An experimental study was carried out to support the development of standards test methods for fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) bars used as concrete reinforcement. In addition, this study compares the elastic modulus values from tensile stress-strain curves with the dynamic values obtained nondestructively. Dynamic modulus of elasticity was determined using two stress wave propagation methods: ultrasonic pulse velocity and resonant frequency. The dynamic values compared favorably with values obtained from tensile stress-strain curves. The results showed the feasibility of using nondestructive methods, as control test, to estimate FRP bars elastic modulus in a manufacture process.
